O ano é 2030. Ted Mosby está contando a história de como conheceu sua esposa para seus filhos. A história começa no ano de 2005, quando Ted tem então 27 anos de idade. Ted é Arquiteto e foi estimulado a querer se casar após o advogado Marshall Eriksen e a educadora de infância Lily Aldrin, seus melhores amigos, ficaram noivos após nove anos de namoro. A nova aventura de Ted põe em desespero seu amigo mulherengo, Barney Stinson. Mas logo depois do casamento de Marshall e Lily, Ted acreditava que sua nova companheira de vida ia ser repórter e âncora de notícias aspirantes Robin Scherbatsky, mas, apesar de ter tido um romântico relacionamento com ela, acabou, sendo que as crianças conhecem sua "tia" Robin. Como Ted transmite a história para seus filhos, as constantes são de que seu tio Marshall, tia Lily, tio Barney e tia Robin estão sempre na história e, portanto, têm algo relacionado a como ele conheceu a sua mãe (How i met your mother).
